Tyres and chassis – these were the two main challenges of Menyhért Krózser’s weekend at the second round of the FIA Karting European Championship – KZ2 in Sarno, Italy. Tyre issues have plagued the entire field throughout the year, and this time, one of Menyhért’s tyres had to be replaced due to a manufacturing defect. However, a bigger problem was that the CRG team couldn’t find a suitable chassis setup for the Dunlop tyres. Despite all this, the MHH Racing Team driver didn’t give up, kept fighting, and only a collision prevented him from reaching the final.
“It was a very tough weekend,” said Menyhért Krózser. “The tyre quality still hasn’t improved. We’re allowed to use 10 tyres from qualifying to the final, and two of mine developed craters. One of them was replaced because the factory defect was so obvious.
Every race feels like a lottery. If you get a good tyre, it’s great, but if you get a bad one, you stand no chance. And this is happening in the top-tier FIA series…
A bigger problem was that the team struggled to set up the chassis for these tyres. We tried a lot of things during free practice, but we just couldn’t find grip. We took a risk and went in a different direction for qualifying, but it didn’t work out. It was the toughest qualifying session of my life.
We improved steadily in the heats, and by the super heat, my kart felt pretty good – but then I got caught up in a collision. There’s a bump in the middle of the last corner, it launched my kart and I hit the driver next to me, which led to my disqualification from the super heat. That’s never happened to me before. They didn’t take the bump into account, but that’s how it is – you can only accept the stewards’ decision.
Overall, it’s hard to find any positives from this weekend, but I still tried to make the most of the situation. I can only hope this tyre chaos gets resolved and I’ll finally have a clean weekend.”
